Philip Reed, Director of the New Churchill Museum

Phil has worked for the Imperial War Museum, the parent body of the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms, since 1975. After 18 years working in the Department of Documents of the IWM, Phil took over the task of running the Cabinet War Rooms in March 1993 and was responsible for conceiving, driving through and finding funding for expansion of the site into its full wartime footprint, all of which is now open to the public. The final part of the expansion, the Churchill Museum – the first major museum in the world dedicated to Churchill’s memory and legacy – was formally opened by Her Majesty The Queen in February 2005 and is an intrinsic part of the historic Cabinet War Rooms, attracting over 300,000 visitors per annum, including a large number of American visitors. Phil Reed has written extensively on the history of the Cabinet War Rooms and Winston Churchill in the Second World War and has given numerous radio and TV interviews for the media in the UK, USA, Europe and the Southern hemisphere.

Phil was born and grew up in Liverpool - where his family have lived for several generations - till leaving for University in 1969. He has lived in Dulwich, south London since 1982.

The Churchill Museum is the first museum dedicated to the life and achievements of Sir Winston Churchill. This permanent exhibition is housed within the unique historic setting of the Cabinet War Rooms, Churchill's secret underground wartime base.
